Surfside Woodworks we build quality decks from a wide variety of different materials and price ranges. The lowest
price sector being pressure treated pine, and the highest being exotic South American hardwoods such as ipe (pronounced
eepay), and the middle price range being covered by composites. There are so many different products to choose from that for
a person who does not do work in this industry, it can be quite confusing to know if what you are getting is in fact
the best quality for the money. Our staff at Surfside Woodworks has the knowledge and ability to help you make those decisions
based on a few different factors. The factors are always the same, but since every job is different, just like the
customers that we are doing the job for, the decisions customers make are always different from job to job. Here
are some of the factors you must think about before planning a deck project:
1. Budget:
How much are you planning on spending for a deck?
2. Purpose: What are you mainly
going to use this deck for?
3. Time: How long are you planning on staying in this house?
Once
we come out to talk about your deck project, we will be able to educate you on the best choices to make based the
info that we get from you regarding these questions in our first meeting. it will be much easier for you to make a sound decision
based on facts that are derived from working years in the industry, as opposed to trying to figure it all out for yourself.
We do not try to sell you anything that you do not belive you need. If your budget is $5000, for instance, we will fit
the most deck possible, based on the answers that we get for the above questions, into that budget. We will not try to force
you into spending an extra $2000 on a composite deck if all your budget allows is pressure treated pine. We listen to our
customer's needs, and design decks that fit them.
All of our decks are built with longevity in mind,
and an attention to detail that will make the finished product a work of art in its own respect. There
has been times when customers will go with another deck company, only to find themselves calling us to come back and
repair a job that was never done right to begin with. This is what sets us apart from the competition. We

want to be sure that if you are getting deck quotes from other companies, you are comparing apples to apples. Take a look
at the spec sheet that is provided with your quote to clarify what type of fasteners, lumber, and decking material will be
used. If you are going to be getting quotes from other companies please be sure to ask the following questions before making
a commitment:
- Are you licensed and insured?
- What type of lumber do you use?
- Will you be screwing or nailing down the deck boards?
- How many bolts do you use to hold each beam to a post?
- Will the hardware be stainless steel or galvanized?
- What size joists will you be using for framing?
- Do
you use Hurricane clips and joist hangers?
The answers you get for these questions should be very important in making a decision on which company
to go with considering the expense of adding a deck, and the value that it will add to your property if properly built.
Below are the answers that we provide for the questions asked above: - Yes we are licensed with Brevard County Under Surfside Home Improvement Inc. DBA Surfside Woodworks, License
# 885002877 and have a $1,000,000 liability policy
- Many
companies choose to use .20 ACQ, which is found at Home depot or Lowes. All of our lumber is .40 ACQ Marine
grade lumber. This is ground contact lumber that has double the amount of pressure treatment. This lumber does not contain
arsenic.
- All of our deck boards are screwed
down on both composite and wood decks. If deck boards are nailed down to the joists, over time, as the deck boards expand
and contract with moisture and heat, they will eventually start popping up. Some of our competitors choose to use a small
stainless steel trim nail to hold down composite decking. We will always use a stainless steel screw.
- On all Beam to post junctions we use 2 –Stainless Steel
½” bolts and nuts.
- We always
suggest using stainless steel hardware. In Brevard County especially, we have a high salt content in the air that will eventually
rot out galvanized hardware. Although Stainless is more expensive than galvanized, we feel it is well worth it in the long
run since it will not rot like galvanized hardware. All of our quotes will include stainless hardware unless
instructed differently.
- Any span under 8’ between beams, 2X6 joists will be used. Over an 8’ span, 2X8 joists will be used.
- All connections where the joists run on top of beams are connected with
hurricane clips. And all connection where the joists are running into a ledger or into the side of a beam joist hangers will
be used.
